What If I Don’t Know What I’m Doing in the Gym? A Guide for Women Over 50 Starting Strength Training

TLDR

  • You’re not expected to know what you’re doing when you start
  • Most women over 50 feel unsure at first—and that’s normal
  • A good trainer will guide you through every step
  • You’ll start to feel more confident within the first few weeks
  • The hardest part is showing up for the first time

“What if I don’t know what I’m doing?”

This is one of the most common concerns we hear, especially from women over 50 starting strength training, and it’s completely normal to feel this way.

The difference between a personal training studio like 212 and larger gyms is that you will always have a trainer present to support you. Our trainers are excellent at teaching beginners how to perform exercises safely and with correct form. They are also incredible at making all our members, and especially new members, feel welcome and comfortable during their workouts.

We understand that if you’re going to start exercising consistently, you need to feel comfortable during your workout and to leave the gym feeling better than when you came in. We regularly remind our trainers how they felt when they first started training in a gym- most of us were intimidated too. We then ensure we make the experience at 212 welcoming, supportive and not intimidating. Most people feel noticeably more comfortable after just a few workouts!

It’s completely normal to feel concerned that you don’t know what you’re doing, but we don’t need you to know anything before you start. No one walks into their first workout knowing what to do.

Because gyms and strength training have typically been male dominated, it’s very common for women over 50 starting strength training to unsure of themselves. We specialize in helping women over 50 who are new to strength training get started and being seeing meaningful results. It’s important to remember you’re not behind, you’re just starting!

“Will I feel out of place?”

I recently went to a fitness conference, and the last event of the day was a group workout. I already knew most of the people there, but I was still very nervous before the workout began.

It’s completely normal for everyone, not just beginners, to worry that they will do something wrong or that other people will be watching and judging them.

Because we keep our members active and moving in both personal training and group strength training sessions, the reality is that most people are focused on their own workout and don’t have time to pay attention to what someone else is doing.

We have an incredibly supportive community at 212 where beginners are welcomed. We also design workouts to set you up for success, so you can build confidence early.

And if you’re wondering whether you’re too old to start, read this guide on strength training for women over 50.

Tina started 3 years ago and had the same concerns- worried that she wouldn’t know what to do and that she would embarrass herself. She started in our personal training program where she not only saw great results but also built confidence in how to exercise with proper form. She quickly added group training, bonded with other members and is now one of the most welcoming people in our community.

“What actually happens during your first few workouts?”

Your trainer will be waiting for you at the front door with a smile. Our studio has an intimate feel, and you can see the entire training floor when you walk in.

You’ll start your workout with a warm-up- simple movements you can learn quickly that prepare you for your strength exercises that day.

Your trainer will demonstrate each movement right before you perform it, so you only need to focus on one exercise at a time.

Your trainer will also be watching you closely, giving coaching cues and helping you get into the correct positions if needed.

If you start in one of our small group sessions, the trainer will introduce you to the other members and everyone will introduce themselves.

We know that a supportive environment makes it easier to stay consistent, and we want you to feel welcome from day one.

“How do you make sure I’m doing things correctly?”

Our trainers receive extensive training on exercise progressions. We start with simple movements someone with zero experience can perform correctly and then progress those movements over time.

We also take the time to understand each member’s ability, so your trainer will always give you movements you can perform safely and correctly.

Your trainer will demonstrate each movement before you perform it and provide real-time feedback while you’re doing it. This includes:

  • Verbal cues
  • Demonstrations
  • Hands-on adjustments (if appropriate)

If you’re struggling, your trainer will either give you extra support or modify the exercise so it fits your current ability level.

Our trainers will ensure you are performing movements that will keep you safe and that you can perform correctly, so you build confidence in performing those exercises. We don’t let our members struggle through an exercise hoping the members just “get it”- we’re going to make sure you can perform an exercise or movement safely and correctly with confidence and then give you an opportunity to build upon it. You won’t be left guessing—we guide you through every step.

“What if I make mistakes?”

We’re not going to lie to you and tell you that you’ll never make a mistake- the truth is that we all make mistakes, even experienced people! Mistakes are a natural part of learning a new movement- it’s almost impossible to learn something new without making at least a few small mistakes. Also, if you never make a mistake in an exercise, the exercise probably isn’t hard enough to help you progress.

At 212, we understand that mistakes will happen, so we plan for them to minimize any potential injury or embarrassment. We start by giving you exercises that you can perform almost perfectly and that won’t cause injury when you do make small mistakes. We continue that approach when we give you exercise progressions. It’s also important to remember that most “mistakes” won’t cause and injury and aren’t even noticeable to other members- only your trainer will see these “mistakes” and help you work through them. When you make mistakes, it helps your trainer see where you have weaknesses and give you exercises that will help improve those areas.

“What’s the best way to get started if I feel unsure?”

Our personal training program is the best way to get started. You’ll work with a supportive trainer who will make you feel welcome and comfortable. Your trainer will develop a strength training program specific to your goals and specific to your experience level. You’ll be surprised at how quickly you learn new movements and how the strength you build in only two to three workouts (the CDC recommends two muscle strengthening activities each week) makes those movements easier. The CDC recommends two

If you start in one of our group classes, our trainers will help you start slow and take a “crawl, walk, run” approach to your training. Perform new exercises slowly and focus on starting and finishing in a good position. You’ll also want to use lighter weights and resistance for your first two to four weeks, so you can build proper movement patterns. Harvard Health recommends this approach to reduce risk of muscle strains and rotator cuff tears. Once you can perform the movement with good form, slowly add more weight and resistance. People can sometimes get impatient during this learning period, but trust us, when you learn to move safely and efficiently, you’ll build more strength and see better results in the long run, since you’ll have a lower risk of injury and target the goal muscles of each exercise.

FAQ

Do I need experience before joining a gym?

Not at all. Many of our best success stories started with zero experience. In fact, beginners often progress quickly because they’re learning proper movement from the start.

What if I forget what to do during a workout?

That’s expected. Our trainers are prepared for that and will guide you through every step. You’ll never be expected to remember everything.

Is personal training better for beginners?

Yes. Personal training helps you build confidence, learn proper technique, and feel comfortable before transitioning into group training.

“Will I slow the small-group class down?”

No. Our workouts are designed so beginners and experienced members can train together at the same pace.

“What should I wear to my first workout?”

Wear something comfortable—like a T-shirt and shorts or leggings. Supportive shoes are recommended.

“What if I feel nervous right before I go?”

That’s completely normal.

We’ve built our onboarding process to reduce that stress. You’ll start with a consultation (not a workout), meet your trainer, and get familiar with the space.

Even with that, you may still feel a little nervous—and that’s okay. It gets easier every time you come in.

Starting something new, especially in a gym, can feel uncomfortable. Not knowing what you’re doing, worrying about making mistakes, or feeling out of place are all completely normal concerns. In fact, almost every person we’ve worked with felt that way before they started.

With the right coaching, a supportive environment, and a plan that meets you where you are, those feelings of uncertainty start to fade quickly. You begin to understand the movements, build confidence, and realize that you belong there just as much as anyone else.

You don’t need experience and you don’t need to feel ready. You just need to start!
